Education

  • 1949-1954: Undergraduate: Moscow State University, Department of Mechanics and Mathematics. Major: Fluid Mechanics. Moscow. Russia.
  • 1954-1957: Graduate: Institute of Oceanology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Moscow. Russia.

Research Interests

  • Large-scale ocean circulation
  • Coastal dynamics

I am primarily interested in process oriented studies. In my research I am using both analytical and numerical methods of investigations. Currently I am working on the following two projects:

I. Physical processes controlling the water, heat, and salt exchange between the Pacific and Indian Oceans The basic tool: A regional model based on the Princeton Ocean Model.

II. Model skill assessment based on the comparison of observed and simulated data. The main question is how to use the observed data for a model validation. Different numerical models are analyzed.

III. The comparison of spectral characteristics of the observed (STACS) and simulated (NLOM) Gulf Stream transports at 27N from April, 1982 to March, 1995 [STACS stands for the Subtropical Atlantic Climate Studies program]. The basic tool: Spectral analysis of short time series.

IV. Physical processes governing seasonal variations of the Florida Current. The research is based on the analysis of the HYCOM simulation data.
